Motherdear, I believe this would be the wrong time to nominate Old Horsetail Snake for best comedic blogsite, since his wife just died, and he won't be posting for a while. I'll revisit his blog and nominate him maybe in December or January.

At 12/02/2005 8:54 PM, Blogger Red Tory said...

Originality is a good thing. Cause it would really suck if someone took an old e-mail joke from several years ago and then crudely recrafted it to make it seem as if they'd written it and pass it off as original material. Oh... look, it's snowing outside dammit, gotta run.

At 12/02/2005 9:12 PM, Blogger Motherdear said...

I hear you on that one, Martin. I don't set up rules on originality mainly because I wouldn't know if most of them were original or not. But I remember the particular email you describe as a xeroxed joke posted on the staff bathroom bulletin board back in 1988!!! It was hilarious then, so I guess it was only natural that it would make its way into the emails and eventually, into the blogs. I'd love to see people at least saying "hey gang, I am borrowing this email thing today because it's really funny" rather than trying to pass these things off as original. But I only manage the nominations and count votes. So I don't have a right to be the Originality Police! Thank you for rewarding originality, and for coming and voting!

I must admit that I am somewhat surprised, and disappointed that one of the 'Best Comedic Posts' is a plagerized old e-mail joke from several years ago. I noticed that several others remembered it as well. It is joke #695 on WWW.emailjoke.com. Though the site, and those who nominate something, can not be held responsible for the originality of a post as they may not know, I do think that if one is identified as a plagerized post it should no longer be considered.

As for the blogs, they are all funny, in different ways. When it comes to humor, I guess to each their own, and just because someone does not find one blog funny that does not necessarily qualify them as a "retard" as one poster chose to put it, they just have a different sense of humor. Like for instance, I don't find it the least bit funny to call someone a "retard", though clearly some would disagree with that.

At 12/05/2005 2:51 PM, Blogger Bentz said...

Maybe the blogger who recycled a widely disseminated joke as her own work could withdraw that entry and submit another for consideration?

How about a bit on airline food? Or wry observances of the differences between black people and white people? Or some sort of list humorously indicating one's socio-economic standing as a function of the number of rusted-out cars resting on blocks in front of their trailer home?

Comic gold.

Motherdear,

It really had nothing to do with being offended. Believe me, I am not easily offended... For example, I happen to be an enormous fan of the Rude Pundit and if you're familiar with his oeuvre you'll see what I mean. But there's an enormous difference between his expletives, which are often times HIGHLY imaginative, but are employed to wickedly funny effect and simply saying "fuck" and "shit" all the time for no apparent reason.

It wasn't the language that bothered me, aside from its gratuitous usage, it was the evident lack of humour — IN MY OPINION. I guess if you find farting funny... (and it can be mildly so at times, especially when a lighter is involved) well, then so be it. As another commenter said, to each his own.

One final note and that is I respect your desire for "First Amendment Rights" and the avoidance of "Censorship" but perhaps it might not be a bad idea to exercise a little more, um, how shall we call it... "editorial discretion."

No offense intended.

Rgds,
Martin

p.s. And to the induhvidual who suggested I am simply jealous, my blog doesn't purport to be humorous or comical other than in the most incidental sort of way, so that's just a silly contention.

At 12/05/2005 6:06 PM, Blogger Red Tory said...

Carrie,
My intention was not to insult or offend you, I simply found it inexplicable as to why you were nominated in this category. Sorry if my remarks caused you any undue grief.

And, with respect, I did actually read through your blog and that is how I arrived at my opinion. It seemed to me more like a personal journal than anything that was intentionally or overtly comical.

As for it not being about flatulence, well of course it isn't in the literal sense of the term, but you might want to reconsider the name of the blog if you want to avoid that misunderstanding in future.

Anywhoooo... apologies again for the harsh critique. I've found in my experience online that it helps to have a pretty tough hide sometimes.

At 12/05/2005 7:10 PM, Blogger Motherdear said...

Okay, everyone. I will remove Carrie's blog at her request. I owe her that much.

Martin, I am sorry that I cannot always exercise editorial discretion. Perhaps I should ask for nominations and then recruit a panel to see which ones actully go 'into the running'. I just am not comfortable with being an editor. As I said, I am a 'poster and counter' and other than reserving the right to nominate and vote myself, that's as involved as I get. My purpose was to have a place to share and recognize. And I guess I did that.

I'm beginning to think I should just shut this down and say 'the heck with it.'

Sorry, everyone. Sorry, sorry, sorry...

At 12/06/2005 4:31 AM, Blogger FugStick said...

Motherdear: please don't let a little e-squabble make you question your model or method here.

Nobody is going to die from being critiqued on the internet, and your desire to value a democratic nomination process over the potential pitfalls of such a process is laudable.

It strikes me that it is probably inevitable that this sort of thing will create these sorts of conflicts, but here's the beauty of what you've done here:

I'm a frequenter of Martin's blog, and obviously prejuduced by that fact, but nonetheless, I'm about to go read at least a few posts on a blog (Carrie's) that I'd never heard of before this thread.

Maybe I'll think her blog is stupid, maybe I'll think mArtin was too harsh, maybe it'll inspire me to take a few minutes out of my work-nap-pc game-read blogs existence to actually begin blogging in earnest myself. Who knows, or really cares?

I know this: I'll be keeping an eye out for the next month's nominees.

cheers,

ltt

Thank you, ltt. You are a sage advisor and I appreciate and respect your support.

I will look forward to seeing you again. Please, share nominations for December as soon as I get the nomination pages up!

Again, my gratitude to all.
